Jailed Cuban Dissident Ends Hunger Strike Latin American Herald Tribune/EFE January 5, 2016
HAVANA – Cuban dissident Vladimir Morera, currently serving a four-year jail sentence, has ended the hunger strike he has been on since Oct. 9 to demand his release, though he remains hospitalized in a very weakened state, his son told EFE.
“My dad ended the strike and he’s been taking liquid nourishment by mouth for the past five days,” Vladier Morera said.
Vladier Morera said he saw his father last Sunday for an hour in the intermediate care unit of the Arnaldo Millan Castro University Hospital in Villa Clara, where he was admitted about two weeks ago.
Vladimir Morera, 45, was arrested on April 19 after painting some rebellious graffiti on the walls of his home in Manicaragua, Villa Clara province, the same day that municipal elections were held nationwide.
His son said the prisoner is now quite confused and, though hs father recognized him when he visited him, he doesn’t remember anything and “doesn’t know why he’s there.”
“The doctors said my father is suffering memory loss from not getting any vitamins during his hunger strike, but that he’ll get it back little by little,” he said.
Vladimir Morera had already served a sentence in 2014 and was one of the 53 political prisoners released by Cuba late last year at the request of the United States when the renewal of bilateral diplomatic ties was announced.
